Speculation[]
- A theory on "markets" if referring to financial could be the US Federal Reserve's plan to scale back quantitative easing. In mid May of 2013 Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke gave a speech in which he hinted that they were possibly planning to end quantitative easing. Within minutes of the speech the US stock markets began to tank. Over the course of about 2-3 days the world stock markets had dropped about 2-5% depending the volotility of the specific index. It took a second speech from the Federal Reserve to state that they were not in fact scaling back QE any time in the near future before this pull back in the markets started to tail off.
- The US stock market has since recovered from this pull back however it is still expected that the Federal Reserve will start scaling back QE if the American economy continues to improve. Interestingly a lot of professionals believe this will begin sometime in September 2013 and will end mid way through 2014. Looking at what happened in May suggests that there is still a lot of fear over the unknown effects of finally ending QE and a lot of people believe it is masking a broken economy.
